The Worst Thing About Procrastination

Author: Trevor Johnson

At times, most of us will lapse into procrastinating. We'll put things off that we know we shouldn't and we'll come up with all sorts of kind-of plausible excuses as to why we haven't done something that, deep down, we know we should have done. Here are some of the lamest things about procrastination. See which one matches you best.

There's not been enough time

Follow up:

If you believe this one, you'll believe anything. Unless your deadline for the 30,000 word report is 5 minutes away, there's almost always been enough time. The problem is that we are good at finding things to do with our time that don't actually help solve the problem. Checking emails or Facebook every two minutes. Making and drinking another cup of coffee. Watching the news on the offchance that they've found something that's actually newsworthy to talk about. The list of excuses for not doing something is almost never ending and there's almost always one we can use as an excuse to procrastinate.

Not planning (or planning to fail)

Oftentimes our procrastination is a result of not bothering to plan ahead. It's OK not to plan trivial stuff and anything you do by routine probably near enough plans itself. But other things deserve the courtesy of being planned ahead, especially if they are likely to affect other people. It may seem self evident but how often have you failed to plan for something and then found that you haven't got everything in place to actually do whatever it was you wanted to do. The end result equals procrastinating and putting it off. Again.

Planning to procrastinate

There probably aren't too many people who would admit to this. But if you're a seasoned procrastinator, there's a good chance that various delaying tactic tools are a natural part of your daily routine. You know the "dog ate my homework" type excuses off by heart and maybe you even keep a small notebook so that you don't trip up and attend the same dead relative's funeral too often.

Clock watching

If your reaction is "Oh good, I'm out of time" even if you didn't complete the task in hand then there's a good chance that - deep down - you actually enjoy putting things off until tomorrow. Sometimes it's good - there are occasions when we need chance to think about something rather than just open our big mouth. But other times it just bugs the hell out of everyone around us who has to come to the rescue (again) when we fail to deliver on time.

Screwing up our priorities

Some things have a higher priority than others. That should go without saying but it's often the case that we'll give a higher priority to choosing the type of cake we're going to eat with our Starbucks than we do to completing that important assignment that we got given the other day. If you have difficulty deciding the priority of a task you've been set, check with the person who gave you the task. And if they don't have a clue about it either, decide for yourself that it's actually a low priority and deliberately procrastinate on it.
